Eriphia verrucosa (Forskal, 1775) = Eriphia spinifrons (Herbst, 1785) Black Sea
Range. Eastern Atlantic from the Bay of Biscay to Mauritania, including Madeira, the Azores,
and the Mediterranean; Black Sea. [Manning & Holthuis, 1981; Zariquiey Alvarez, 1968].
Inhabits the coastal zone among stones, on sand and shell rock, among algae, to 25-30 m,
more frequent on the stone breakwaters. Widespread in the Black Sea. Holthuis (1961)
records it from the coast of Turkey for the first time; Volkanov (1938, 1957) - for the Varna
Bay and Sozopol. [Kobjakova & Dolgopolskaya, 1969, p. 295].
Size of carapace. The biggest crab of the Black Sea [and Cancer pagurus ?, A.A.], up to 65,7
x 87,5 mm. [Kobjakova & Dolgopolskaya, 1969, p. 295].
