[Williams, 1984, p. 309].  Hard, stony, sandy and soft bottom (Christiansen 1969); commoner on soft bottom where H.  coarctatus is rarer, the two species being complementary (Hartnoll 1963); intertidal to 350-  360 m, usually less than 50 m.
