Pinnixa rathbuni Sakai, 1934 Far East / North Pacific
Range. Off coasts of Japan; Peter the Great Gulf (Posyet Bay), off coasts of southern and
southwestern Sakhalin, and in South Kuril Strait. [Vassilenko, 1990, p. 86]. South part of
Sakhalin Island, Peter the Great Gulf (Sea of Japan), along the coasts Honshu Island.
[Vinogradov, 1950, p. 240]. Peter the Great Gulf, off Honshu Island, in South-Kuril Strait and
in Aniva Bay. [Zhirmunskiy, 1976, p. 55]. “Japan endemic; from Aomori Bay to Ohsaka Bay
and the Inland Sea of Japan.” [Sakai, 1976, p.586].
Free-form and commensal species, inhabits tubes of polychaete. From littoral to a depth of 132
m. Muddy, muddy-sandy, sandy and shelly bottoms. [Vassilenko, 1990, p. 86]. Inhabits muddy
bottoms or muddy bottoms with shell debris. Often the crabs are symbionts of large-size
polychaete, inhabiting their tubes. [Zhirmunskiy, 1976, p. 55]. “Inhabits the muddy or shelly
bottoms in the depth of 30 to 85 metres. Free living, sometimes swarms on the bottoms.”

Size of carapace. Up to 8,0 x 17,7 mm (length x width), males; up to 11,2 x 22 mm (length x
width), females. [Vassilenko, 1990, p. 86]. Upp to 7 mm. [Zhirmunskiy, 1976, p. 55]. 5 x 8,5
mm (length x width), male; 11,2 x 22 mm (length x width), largest female. [Sakai, 1976,
p.586].
