Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 Black Sea
Range. “Callinectes sapidus inhabits the E coast of America from Nova Scotia to Uruguay.
It has been introduced into European waters.” [Holthuis & Gottlieb, 1958, p. 91].
In the Black Sea it was found for the first time in 1967 - near seashore of Bulgaria, sand
bottom, at a depth of 5-6 m (Bulgurkov, 1968). In the ex-USSR the first record was near Poti
(1975) at hydrofront of Rioni river (Shaverdashvili & Ninua, 1975). There are records from
the Kerch Strait (Zaytsev, 1978) and Utrish Cape at a depth of 20 m and salinity10 and 20
prom (Monin, 1984). [Makarov, 2004, p. 382].
Size of carapace. 65 x 140 mm (male). [Guinot, 1979, p. 305].
