Eriocheir japonica (De Haan, 1835) Far East / North Pacific
Range. From Amur estuary to Hong Kong and from small rivers of NE Sakhalin to Formosa
(= Taiwan). [Vinogradov, 1950, p. 242]. “Entire Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinava and also
ranges to Vladivostok, north and east coasts of Korea, Formosa and Hong Kong.” [Sakai,
1976, p. 647].
“Very commonly inhabits the rivers and streams but very often seen on the rocky or estuarine
coasts.” [Sakai, 1976, p. 647]. Breeds and spends the winter near river estuaries, during
feeding migratins goes upstream. [Vinogradov, 1950, p. 242; Zhirmunskiy, 1976, p. 56].
Size of carapace. 61 x 56 mm (width x length), male. [Sakai, 1976, p. 647]. Length up to 60
mm. [Zhirmunskiy, 1976, p. 56].
